I was 20 years old with $30,000 in credit card debt, no job, no car, no place to live when it hit me! I had no clue what I was doing with money. And I did not want to continue down this path. There had to be a better way.
I started paying attention to people I knew and asked them questions. I noticed a lot of them were in the same boat.
My parents: 12 kids (I’m the oldest) no money, lots of debt, no retirement plans, no life insurance, no clue.
My friends: Some were better off than me, but not by much. They had no idea about making their money work.
My siblings: They were innocently oblivious. Too young to care.
My friend’s rich husband: But then there was this one. He was different. He invested. He understood the markets. He owned a business. He had good debt (I didn’t even know that was a thing!) And the craziest part, he was the only one that wasn’t skeptical about my questions. He was ok with me asking and gave me some thought-provoking answers. All of which led me to one major decision.
I was going to get financially literate. That was how I was going to change my finances and my future.
And so I did, and the rest is history as they say.
So what did I talk about with my friend’s rich husband?
First of all, it was the fact that we actually talked. Most people won’t even talk openly about money. Even today with all the modernizations in our society it’s still a taboo subject.
So, the fact that someone who had money was willing to talk about it, left a big impression on me. When you talk about money, you learn about money.
I learned that money should be an open conversation. And when it is, you are exposed to so many more ways to have it work for you.
Being $30,000 in debt, wasn’t something I openly talked about, until that call. And as we talked about it, I learned about ways to get out of debt and increase my savings.
The result? Exactly 12 months after that conversation I was 100% debt free, saved $30,000, and started my first investment account!
How do you become financially literate?
Start by talking about money.
Talk about it with your kids.
Talk about it with your parents.
Talk about it with your siblings.
Talk about it with your coworkers.
Talk about it with your friends rich husband(…if you have one of those!)
Because talking about it, is how you start learning about it.
It gives you exposure to the lingo.
Things like IRAs, IULs, Roths, 401ks become less foreign.
It makes you think of what’s possible with your financial goals.
It can lead you to people who are very knowledgeable about financial strategies.
And ultimately, financial literacy is what you need to change your financial future.
Don’t have people around you to talk with about money?
It’s why I started The World Changers.
To have a community of like-minded people who all want to learn about money. To make it easy to learn what you need to know to build wealth. To make it easy to understand the language of money. So that you too can become like my friend’s rich husband.
I made this for people like me. I wish I had this when I was young. Because until that call with my rich friend’s husband, I had no one to talk to about money.
